Marie Selby

During Women’s History Month, we honor the extraordinary contributions of Marie Selby, whose legacy continues to shape Sarasota. Born Mariah Minshall in 1885, Marie’s passion for nature and community service left an incredible mark on the city she cherished.
Marie Selby’s most enduring gift to Sarasota is the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens, established in 1973. This 15-acre oasis in downtown Sarasota is dedicated to the study and display of epiphytic plants, such as orchids and bromeliads. Marie’s vision for a green sanctuary has blossomed into a cherished landmark, reflecting her profound love for nature and unwavering commitment to the community.
Beyond the gardens, Marie Selby’s philanthropic spirit lives on through the William and Marie Selby Foundation, founded in 1955. The foundation has significantly impacted Sarasota by supporting education, the arts, health services, and more. Through these grants, Marie’s legacy continues to enrich the lives of countless individuals, fostering a vibrant and culturally rich community.
As Marie once said, “I want others to find enjoyment from my property.” Her words and actions remind us of the lasting influence one person can have on their community. Marie Selby’s legacy exemplifies the power of vision and generosity, inspiring us all to contribute to the betterment of our surroundings.
